Egg freezing, also known as oocyte cryopreservation, is a method of preserving a woman’s unfertilized eggs for future use. This process enables women to delay childbearing for medical or personal reasons while maintaining the potential to conceive later in life using their own eggs. Egg freezing has become an essential advancement in reproductive technology, offering autonomy and flexibility in family planning. The process begins with ovarian stimulation using hormonal medications to induce the maturation of multiple eggs. This is followed by ultrasound monitoring and blood tests to track follicular development. Once the eggs reach maturity, a trigger injection (hCG or GnRH agonist) is administered, and the eggs are retrieved through a minimally invasive procedure called transvaginal ultrasound aspiration. After retrieval, the eggs are assessed for maturity and quality. Mature eggs are cryopreserved using a technique known as vitrification—a rapid-freezing process that prevents ice crystal formation and preserves cellular integrity. The frozen eggs are then stored in liquid nitrogen tanks at -196°C until needed. Egg freezing is recommended for women facing medical conditions that may impair fertility, such as cancer treatment, autoimmune disorders, or premature ovarian failure. It is also an option for women who wish to delay motherhood for career, educational, or personal reasons. By freezing eggs at a younger age, women preserve better-quality oocytes, increasing future pregnancy success rates. When a woman decides to use her frozen eggs, they are thawed, fertilized with sperm through IVF or ICSI, and transferred as embryos into the uterus. While not all eggs survive the freezing and thawing process, vitrification technology has significantly improved survival and pregnancy rates. Egg freezing provides psychological comfort and reproductive independence. However, success depends on age at freezing, egg quality, and laboratory expertise. It does not guarantee pregnancy but serves as a powerful option for fertility preservation and reproductive control.
