Hysteroscopy

Hysteroscopy is a minimally invasive diagnostic and therapeutic procedure that allows direct visualization of the interior of the uterus using a thin, lighted instrument called a hysteroscope. It plays a vital role in evaluating and treating uterine conditions that may interfere with fertility or complicate the outcome of assisted reproductive treatments like IVF. By providing a detailed view of the uterine cavity, hysteroscopy helps fertility specialists identify abnormalities that might prevent an embryo from implanting or developing properly. The procedure is typically performed under local, regional, or light general anesthesia. The hysteroscope is inserted through the vagina and cervix into the uterus without requiring any incisions, making it relatively painless and quick. During diagnostic hysteroscopy, the physician inspects the uterine lining (endometrium) and identifies any structural issues such as polyps, fibroids, adhesions (Asherman’s syndrome), uterine septum, or abnormal tissue growth. A saline solution or carbon dioxide gas is gently introduced to expand the uterus, allowing for clear visualization of the walls and cavity. When an abnormality is detected, operative hysteroscopy can be performed during the same session. Miniaturized surgical instruments are passed through the hysteroscope to remove polyps, resect fibroids, correct septa, or remove scar tissue. These interventions can dramatically improve the chances of successful implantation and pregnancy, particularly for women with recurrent miscarriages or repeated IVF failures. Hysteroscopy is also used to investigate abnormal uterine bleeding, evaluate the causes of infertility, and confirm the condition of the uterine cavity before embryo transfer. Compared to older diagnostic methods like dilation and curettage (D&C), hysteroscopy is far more precise, minimally invasive, and preserves uterine integrity. After the procedure, most women experience minimal discomfort and can resume normal activities within a day or two. The findings from hysteroscopy often guide fertility specialists in tailoring treatment plans to ensure the uterus is in optimal condition before IVF or embryo transfer. In many cases, correcting uterine abnormalities through hysteroscopy has directly resulted in higher pregnancy and live birth rates. In essence, hysteroscopy serves as a critical tool in reproductive medicine. By offering both diagnostic accuracy and the ability to perform immediate corrective measures, it enhances the effectiveness of IVF treatments and ensures that every embryo has the best possible environment for successful implantation and growth.
