A sperm bank, also known as a semen bank or cryobank, is a facility that collects, analyzes, stores, and distributes human sperm for use in assisted reproductive technologies (ART) such as intrauterine insemination (IUI), in vitro fertilization (IVF), and Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI). Sperm banks play a crucial role in enabling conception for couples experiencing male infertility or for individuals who require assisted reproductive support. The process of sperm banking begins with donor screening. Potential donors undergo thorough medical, genetic, and psychological evaluations to ensure the safety and quality of donated sperm. Screening includes infectious disease testing (for HIV, Hepatitis B and C, Syphilis, etc.), genetic disorder screening, and semen analysis to assess sperm count, motility, and morphology. Approved donors provide sperm samples through masturbation, which are then processed and cryopreserved. In the laboratory, sperm are analyzed and prepared using sperm washing techniques that separate motile sperm from seminal plasma and debris. The cleaned sample is then mixed with a cryoprotectant and frozen using liquid nitrogen vapor at -196°C. This cryopreservation process allows sperm to remain viable for several decades without significant loss of fertilization potential. Sperm banks maintain two major categories of samples: anonymous donor sperm and directed (known) donor sperm. Recipients may select sperm samples based on donor characteristics such as ethnicity, physical traits, education, and health history. This process helps ensure compatibility and provides additional reassurance for the intended parents. Sperm banking is also valuable for men undergoing medical treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation, or surgery that may impair fertility. By storing sperm prior to treatment, men preserve the possibility of future biological parenthood. Similarly, men working in high-risk professions or those wishing to delay fatherhood may also benefit from sperm banking. Ethical and legal frameworks govern sperm banking to ensure donor consent, confidentiality, and responsible use of samples. Each country has specific regulations regarding donor anonymity and the rights of children born through assisted reproductive technologies.
