In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is one of the most widely used and successful assisted reproductive technologies (ART) designed to help individuals and couples achieve pregnancy when natural conception is not possible or has proven difficult. IVF involves combining a woman’s eggs and a man’s sperm outside the body in a controlled laboratory environment to form embryos, which are then transferred into the uterus for implantation. The IVF process begins with ovarian stimulation, where medications such as gonadotropins are administered to encourage the ovaries to produce multiple eggs. This is followed by careful monitoring using ultrasound and blood hormone tests to track follicle development. Once the eggs reach maturity, they are retrieved through a minor surgical procedure called transvaginal ultrasound aspiration, performed under light anesthesia. The retrieved eggs are then fertilized with sperm in a laboratory dish. Fertilization may occur naturally or through assisted techniques like Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI), depending on the sperm quality. The resulting embryos are cultured for several days, and embryologists assess their growth and quality. Typically, one or more embryos are selected for transfer into the woman’s uterus around day 3 or day 5 after fertilization. Following the embryo transfer, hormonal medications such as progesterone are prescribed to prepare the uterine lining for implantation. If successful, the embryo implants in the uterine wall, resulting in pregnancy. Any remaining viable embryos can be cryopreserved for future use through embryo freezing. IVF is indicated in various cases, including blocked or damaged fallopian tubes, male infertility, endometriosis, unexplained infertility, and advanced maternal age. It is also used for couples requiring donor eggs, sperm, or embryos, and for single individuals or same-sex couples wishing to conceive. Despite its high success rates, IVF is a physically, emotionally, and financially demanding process. It carries some risks such as ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), multiple pregnancies, and procedural complications. However, advancements in technology, genetic screening, and cryopreservation have significantly improved outcomes and safety. Overall, IVF offers hope and a realistic path to parenthood for many who might otherwise be unable to conceive.
